OBJECTIVES: To compare retrograde filling cystometry at infusion rates of 5, 10, and 20 mL/min with diuresis cystometry for determination of an appropriate infusion rate and to confirm the reproducibility of measurements obtained by urethral pressure profilometry (UPP) and cystometry in female Beagles. ANIMALS: Adult female Beagles. PROCEDURE: Successive UPP and cystometry were performed by use of a water perfusion catheter on dogs anesthetized with propofol. Dogs randomly underwent each of the following at 1-week intervals: retrograde filling cystometry at 5, 10, and 20 mL/min, and diuresis cystometry. The maximum urethral pressure and closure pressure, functional and anatomic profile lengths, threshold pressure, threshold volume, and compliance were measured. RESULTS: For each UPP variable, significant differences were found among dogs, but no significant differences were found in intra- or interstudy measurements for individual dogs. For retrograde filling cystometry, threshold pressure was not significantly different between a 5 and 10 mL/min infusion rate. Threshold pressure was significantly higher during retrograde filling cystometry at 20 mL/min, compared with 5 and 10 mL/min, and was associated with bladder wall damages. Threshold pressure was significantly lower during diuresis cystometry, compared with retrograde filling cystometries. Threshold volume and compliance were not significantly different among retrograde filling cystometries but were significantly higher during diuresis cystometry. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Retrograde filling cystometry at 20 mL/min leads to unacceptable sudden increase in threshold bladder pressure. Retrograde filling cystometry at 10 mL/min can be recommended in a clinical setting, shortening the anesthesia time. However, diuresis cystometry approximates physiologic bladder filling most accurately.  相似文献

A juvenile loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta) was referred for removal of a fishhook lodged in the coelomic portion of the esophagus. Attempts at manual and endoscopic extraction were unsuccessful and resulted in a 6-cm tear in the coelomic portion of the esophagus. A supraplastron approach was made to the coelomic cavity, allowing access to and repair of the esophageal tear. The turtle recovered well and was able to be released to the wild. The surgical approach was associated with less trauma and shorter healing and rehabilitation times, compared with traditional plastron osteotomy.  相似文献

The QRS amplitude and polarity were determined in 12-lead electrocardiograms recorded from 22 Boxers with ventricular arrhythmias. Eighty-one percent (18/22) of dogs displayed a positive QRS morphology in the caudoventral leads (II, III, and aVF) and 77% (17/22) of dogs displayed a positive QRS morphology in the left precordial leads (V2-V6). In leads I and V1, the polarity of the QRS complex was variable (positive or negative). To determine if these morphologic features were suggestive of ventricular complexes arising from the right or left ventricle, a comparison was made to the QRS complexes in a pace-mapping study performed in 7 healthy mixed-breed dogs. A total of 3 right and 4 left ventricular sites were paced. None of the left ventricular paced sites resulted in a QRS morphology similar to the most common spontaneous ventricular arrhythmia in the Boxers. In contrast, QRS morphology in each of the 3 right ventricular sites was similar to that observed in the Boxers (P < .033). Each of these produced positive deflections in the caudoventral and left precordial leads, but both positive and negative QRS complexes were observed in leads I and V1 only when the right ventricular septum was paced. This finding suggested that the right ventricular septum might be a site of origin for the ventricular rhythm observed in the Boxers because in the Boxers the polarity of leads I and V1 also varied. Pacing the right ventricular outflow tract always resulted in a negative QRS complex in lead 1, whereas pacing the right ventricular apex always resulted in a positive QRS complex in lead I and a negative QRS complex in V1. However, these locations cannot be excluded as possible sites of origin for the spontaneous ventricular arrhythmias in the Boxers because the arrhythmias could be originating from both of these locations. The spontaneous ventricular arrhythmia of the Boxer is most similar to that of paced ventricular rhythms arising from the right ventricle. More precise localization to a region of the right ventricle such as outflow tract, septal, or apical could not be made.  相似文献

Ovine meat production in France, which is continually regressing due to economic difficulties, is based on two main production systems. The first system is located in plains in which one part of the lambs born in the spring are fed grass, and the other part of the lambs are from out of the season parturitions following hormonal treatments and are fattened in sheep houses. The second system is represented by farms in the mountains using hardy breeds which have a natural faculty for out of the season breeding and whose lambs are fattened indoors, whatever the season of birth. Amongst the sanitary problems encountered, parasitism in particular of young animals, is crucial, especially for farms on plains practising grass fattening. These farmers systematically use conventional anthelmintic treatments, in particular against Moniezia and Strongyles. With organic farming, the limited number of conventional anthelmintic treatments is a strong constraint, especially for the management of young grass-fed animals. A study of 10 organic farming farms or farms converting to organic farming (six in the mountains and four in the plains) showed that the size of these farms is inferior to that of conventional ones and have technical performances which are comparable to the average with 20 to 30% extra over-prices on lamb sales. Despite this, the gross margins per ewe in organic farming are equal to the average of those for conventional farms. This is due to the high consumption of concentrate at a high cost (50 to 100% greater than that for conventional farms). Finally, to prevent sanitary risks, certain organic farmers use important amounts of feed supplements containing phytotherapy products whose costs burden a part of the financial results of the farm. On the contrary, other organic farmers are able, by adapting breeding and grazing managements, to significantly decrease animal health costs without increasing feed supplements nor decreasing zootechnical performances.  相似文献

Several studies suggest that the expression of F1 fimbriae could be involved in the virulence of Escherichia coli for chickens. F1 fimbriae display multivalent properties such as adhesion to epithelia or interaction with the immune system that imply specific interactions between the adhesin FimH and different cell receptors. We constructed a delta fimH mutant of the avian pathogenic E. coli MT78 and evaluated its in vivo colonization and pathogenicity, as compared to that of the parent strain. The generated mutant PA68 was unable to adhere in vitro to chicken epithelial pharyngeal or tracheal cells; mutant bacteria were mostly afimbriated although a minority of them displayed altered piliation phenotypes. Two inoculation routes were used to compare the ability of MT78 and PA68 to colonize the respiratory tract and to induce colibacillosis in chickens. In the first model, 2-wk-old axenic chickens were inoculated intratracheally with one or both E. coli strains, after primary infection with infectious bronchitis virus. In the second model, 3-wk-old specific-pathogen-free chickens were inoculated via the caudal thoracic air sac. After intratracheal inoculation, the delta fimH mutant was found to be a better colonizer than MT78 in the trachea of inoculated chickens. Furthermore, when both strains were inoculated simultaneously, the delta fimH mutant constituted 98% of the bacterial population in the trachea at day 7 postinoculation. Irrespective to the inoculation route, MT78 and PA68 showed similar abilities to induce macroscopic lesions in chickens, to provoke bacteremia, and to colonize the internal organs. However, 4 days after intra-air sac inoculation, bacterial counts of the mutant were lower in the spleen and liver than those of MT78. Our results show that FimH is not required for colonization of the trachea of axenic chickens by E. coli and that it is not a major determinant of bacterial pathogenicity. On the contrary, the lack of expression of FimH seems to favor the in vivo colonization of the trachea of chickens by E. coli.  相似文献

The relationships between some organochlorines and metals in the water and in the zebra mussel of the river Seine have been studied in the Parisian area. The bioconcentration of PCBs by the mussel (Kb = 17 × 103) was about 10 fold higher than for other organochlorines. The accumulation and the release response of the mussel to alterations of the water organochlorine levels occurred within a period smaller than 7 days. The correlation between the water and the mussel levels is highly significant for γHCH and PCBs (r=0.94, p<0.01 and r=0.87, p<0.05, respectively). The Pb bioconcentration (0.15 × 103) was about 20 fold lower than the Cu and Cr (3.4 and 3.0 × 103, respectively). The Cu and the Pb levels in the water and in the mussel followed a parallel course. Cu and Pb appear to be taken up and released relatively rapidly within a 7 day period. Comparisons between the different stations along the river Seine showed that the highest pollutant evels in the water were found downstream Paris and were fairly well reflected by the mussel levels. However, when pollution reaches top values, the mussel metabolic activities are affected and thus, the bioconcentration ability too.  相似文献

The aim of this study is to test a landscape-ecological classification developed for surveys which make use of aerial photographs. This classification is based on relief, parent material and vegetation but leaves out soil properties which are important in landscape ecology. For this purpose, the variability of 11 surface soil characteristics is studied in selected plots of 2 × 3m, along a transect in an area of dissected fluvio-lacustrine deposits near Florence, Italy. It appears that much more than the 5 observations which were made in each plot are needed to establish reasonably accurate estimates of the mean of the variables.By means of a non-parametric test it is demonstrated that the adopted landscape-ecological classification is suitable for further surveying. This test is based on a comparison of all sample combinations for each variable, and for the variables combined per mapping unit. A discriminant function analysis confirms the results of this test.  相似文献
